The Cornermen

The Cornermen is a men's mental health and suicide prevention service, based in Oxfordshire.

The Cornermen Radio award

Based at a boxing club, The Cornermen combines professional support with physical activity and is particularly focussed on reaching men who are experiencing emotional or mental distress, but who are not engaging with other support services.

The male suicide statistics are devastating, and the narrative around men not engaging in mental health or not talking was something that Steve and John, founders of the Cornermen, felt they could change. They use the analogy of fighters needing someone in their corner to encourage men not to face their challenges on their own, and they tailor their support around the individual needs of the men that they work with. Since its launch in 2022, The Cornermen has become a valued partner to other local mental health services.

Phil from IF says...

Post Covid, there has been a rise in the demand for mental health services and consequently the waiting times to access support have risen. The Cornermen are aiming to intervene earlier, to prevent crises from developing and are developing a model that could be used in different areas to increase support for men's mental health.
