Goodies is a community-driven charity that redirects food and resources to reduce waste, support people and build community
Based in Edinburgh, Goodies collect surplus food from supermarkets and distributes it to partner organisations such as homeless shelters, refuges, food pantries and community centres. Tackling the negative impact on the climate caused by greenhouse gas emissions from waste is a major aim of Goodies, but equally as important is a desire to build strong community.
Alongside the food distributions, they also run a hub that houses a community café and a shop selling donated household items, clothing and books. The hub hosts weekly classes and activities, such as art groups, mending workshops and support groups, providing opportunities to make friendships and to reduce loneliness and improve well-being.
Goodies was started by Farah as a response to the community issues arising from the Covid pandemic. We were impressed by its growth both in reach and also in the depth of commitment to the local community and are excited to see how this develops even further.
