Mafwa Theatre uses drama and the arts to create work that brings people together, celebrates their similarities and differences, and speaks truth to power.
Based in Leeds, Mafwa Theatre draws in people from refugee, asylum-seeking and settled communities. They create works that showcase stories of migration and celebrate diverse communities to build connections and change perspectives. They also use arts, academic and social platforms to highlight the work of artists from the migrant communities and to amplify migrant voices.
Mafwa Theatre have also used their creative skills to transform a once disused playground into a vibrant garden of sanctuary, which provides an outdoor space for the wider community to play, rest and to grow food together. Alongside the therapeutic benefits that being in nature provides, gardening together can offer opportunities for people to connect despite language barriers.
We were impressed by Mafwa Theatre's commitment to people and to places that may often be overlooked — building community both through the sharing of stories and through creating a space that draws people together.
